The heart of Milan

History of the building

An eclectic liberty

Commissioned by the real estate company “Quartiere Torino” and entrusted to the engineer Corrado Rossi, the reconstruction project was completed in 1928. The building was designed to house the offices, warehouses and shops of the Cooperative Union. In a hybrid eclectic-floral style, the building reveals a marked pursuit of monumentality and splendour, to ensure that the new headquarters of the Cooperative would have an aesthetic prestige in keeping with its importance, as well as the central position in which it stood. Previously, there were Renaissance-era dwellings in the same area. One of these, Casa Salimbeni, had a courtyard characterised by the presence of elements in terracotta and granite columns, now located and preserved in the courtyard of the Castello Sforzesco.
